Dear Representative/Senator ____________________,
I teach drama at Name of School and I see little miracles nearly every day. Students in my program routinely learn to collaborate with others, find a confidence they’ve never had before, or apply knowledge from other parts of their overall curriculum. I know there are drama students in other schools all across New Mexico doing the same.
Our state’s drama programs have been neglected for a long time, as have other arts programs in our public schools, even though these programs deliver so much for our students: a higher level of engagement in school, improved grades, and a greater likelihood of graduation. I’ve watched my students find a new passion for studying, develop new friendships to help them negotiate difficult subjects and challenging social circumstances, and gain a purpose that they never had before.
We spend a lot of our educational dollars on student athletes, yet in most schools, they comprise just over half of the student body. The other half get neglected in our annual budgets. The support for our athletes is admirable. I want you to consider the other half of our state’s students who cannot or will not participate in any kind of sports. In particular, students studying technical theatre or costuming, as they do in my program, often go on to jobs in the state’s film industry.
When the legislative session begins this January, and bills that offer funding and support for the arts in our schools come before you, I ask that you keep this letter in mind. I ask you to remember that drama and other arts programs in our schools do so much more for our students than teach them to be singers, actors, or dancers. Our programs help these young people to become engaged students and, after they graduate, responsible and respectful citizens.
Thank you for your consideration and for your support of our children.
Sincerely,
