Rehearsals & Performance

Friday, May 2, 2025, 7:30pm in Popejoy Hall
Please note: this is a change from our previously announced date.
This is an overview of what each set of students will perform during the Enchantment Awards:
  • Best Actress/Actor nominees
  • Best Supporting Actress/Actor nominees
  • Directors Choice Chorus (DCC) members
  • Production Ensemble members
More details will be provided to the participants when they are named in the spring.

We also have provided an overview of the schedule from announcement through show closing.

Best Actresses/Actors

What they perform
  • Our 20 individual nominees for Best Actress and Best Actor perform an opening musical number as an ensemble and another as a finale. The finale includes all Enchantment Awards performers.
  • Each individual nominee will also perform a selection from their nominated role together with their fellow nominees in one of our character medleys. Each student will sing about 90 seconds of a song from their adjudicated role.
  • They must be prepared to sing a solo, two and a half minutes or less in length.
Music
  • Opening and closing number music will be distributed ahead of the first rehearsal and students will be expected to have their parts learned when they arrive.
  • All students must have two solos prepared in addition to their character song. We will pick one of the solos for the student to work on during the week with us. Each nominee will sing their solo for a panel of judges the day before the performance and be scored on that solo. Nominee solos can not be from the student’s adjudicated role. We highly recommend choosing solos from a list of songs approved by the Jimmy Awards, though they may be from any Broadway show and role listed as eligible by the Jimmy Awards. Please know that some of the shows listed are not Broadway shows. For assistance, please contact us.
  • Each nominee will also sing a character song in a medley with other nominees. This song will be about 90 seconds of a song from their nominated role. Nominees will be adjudicated on their performances of these songs during the show. We will pick the song for the nominee.
  • Our two winners will take the two songs prepared for the Enchantment Awards, plus two other songs, to the Jimmy Awards. They may choose a song not on the Jimmy Awards approved song list, but it is subject to approval by the Jimmy Awards.
  • We are available to help students select two solo songs any time in the year.
Judging
  • Best Actress/Best Actor (BAs) nominees will sing their solos for a panel of judges on Thursday, May 1. Those judges will issue a score for each nominee’s performance.
  • BAs will all sing in the character medleys in Act One the night of the show. A separate group of judges in Popejoy will score each of those performances. Scores from the character medleys will be added to the scores from the solo performances on Thursday.
  • The five Best Actress nominees and five Best Actor nominees with the highest scores will sing their solos in Act Two. Those ten performances will be judged live by the judges present. Scores for their solos in Act Two (and only those scores) will be tabulated and used to determine our Best Actress and Best Actor.
Workshops
  • Best Actress/Actor nominees will attend workshops and coaching sessions during the week interspersed with rehearsals.
  • Workshops will be designed to improve solo performances.

Best Supporting Actresses/Actors

What they perform
  • Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor nominees (BSAs) will perform in two numbers. The first, at the end of Act One, will be sung with members of the Directors Choice Choice Chorus. The second, at the start of Act Two, will be sung only by our (up to) 20 BSAs.
Music
  • Music will be distributed ahead of the first rehearsal.
  • Students will be expected to have their parts learned when they arrive.
Workshops
  • Best Supporting Actress/Actor nominees will attend a workshop designed for them.

Directors Choice Chorus (DCC)

What they perform
  • Directors Choice Chorus members will sing in the first act finale with the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor nominees.
Music
  • Music will be distributed ahead of the first rehearsal.
  • Students will be expected to have their parts learned when they arrive.
Workshops
  • DCC members will attend a workshop designed for them.

Production Ensembles

What they perform
  • The five finalists for our three production awards are each invited to perform one number from their show.
  • The musical number chosen should be no longer than five minutes.
  • If a school cannot send a number for the show, we will make alternative arrangements.
Music
The selected musical number performed for our awards show:
  • Must be approved in advance by our team.
  • Should capture the character and spirit of the production and include as many ensemble members as possible.
  • May be performed with your show’s own piano accompanist or with ours, your choice.
  • Bands, orchestras and pre-recorded tracks of any kind are not allowed.
Workshops
  • Production ensemble members will attend a workshop designed for them and will likely include students from one or two other schools chosen as finalists.
Special notes for production ensembles:
  • Schools may not make special lighting or sound requests.
  • Dressing rooms will be provided.
  • A very limited number of props or set elements may be included in the number but your cast must be able to set them and strike them in 30 seconds or less. No stagehands will be available to assist.
  • The Teacher/Director (or a designated representative from the school) is expected to be at any required rehearsals and workshops for the ensembles and for the performance.
  • During the show, cast members will be provided seats in the audience with their ensemble until it is time to prepare for their performance.
