Audition

How to audition

Like last year, we are accepting students into our program through direct, live auditions. Auditions will be held March 15 and 16. Here’s how it works:
  1. Sign up for an audition time and date. Make note of the appointment. The time, date, and Zoom link will be sent to you by email. Plan to show up for the audition about 15 minutes early.
  2. Choose a song to sing, something from a Broadway musical. Make it about 3 minutes long or shorter.
  3. Find accompaniment for the song. Piano accompaniment will work best for this purpose, either live or pre-recorded.
  4. Practice the song, paying close attention to the story of it. Work to meet our rubrics to the best of your ability.
  5. On the date and time for your audition, join us on Zoom (about 15 minutes prior to your actual audition time). We will review your sound settings with you to make sure you sound your best.
    1. If you have someone accompanying you live, make sure you are both in the same room.
    2. If you are using pre-recorded accompaniment, play the recording through an external speaker of some kind from a second device, (phone, tablet, or computer), if you can. (Get all this set up ahead of time.)
  6. All those who audition are evaluated by our adjudicators. Watch for your evaluation in your email.
  7. Check back on this website on April 12 to see who our nominees are for Best Actor and Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, and the top five productions.

Our program

We are New Mexico’s regional program for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards. Each ear, we send two students to participate in the Jimmy Awards where they work with Broadway professionals and perform on a Broadway stage with dozens of their peers from across the country. Our students have been recognized as award winners, finalists, and semi-finalists. Three of our students have won a total of $9,000 in scholarships.

In the meantime, we stage our own version of that program here in New Mexico, called the Enchantment Awards, honoring student artistry, teaching students who are part of our program, and putting on the biggest celebration of high school theatre in New Mexico.
